The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card earns 2x miles on all purchases that can be redeemed for any travel at any time. Miles don’t expire and there’s no limit to how much you can earn. Singapore turned out to be more expensive than I anticipated, so I later took out 100 SGD (~$79) and 60 SGD (~$47) in later ATM trips. These small ATM transactions being fee-free is a huge draw of the card for me. With my previous ATM card, I would have paid a $5 fee for using an ATM abroad plus whatever fee the ATM’s owner levied. That would have worked out to about 20% of the value of the cash I was taking out on a $50 withdrawal!
Credit and debit cards with no foreign transaction fees are the cheapest, easiest ways to get money and make payments overseas. Credit cards are accepted worldwide, and ATMs are internationally networked through the Visa/Plus and Mastercard/Cirrus networks. You enter your PIN and withdraw your cash just like you would at home, while the exchange rates are automatically handled by the banks.
If you travel abroad for a week or two per year, 3–5% in various fees and bad exchange rates for international card use is not really a big problem.
