By now we all know to look out for foreign transaction fees on the credit cards that we use while traveling abroad – no one likes paying a 3% premium simply to make everyday purchases just because you’re not doing so in the US. But what might slip your mind is whether or not your ATM card will charge you fees for withdrawing cash abroad, which can be equally if not more onerous than the fees credit cards charge. In fact, it can actually be two charges – a flat ATM use fee of $2-5, and a transaction fee that’s usually a percentage of 1-3% of the withdrawal. So you can really save by knowing what your bank charges.

Social networks are a hot spot for work-at-home danger. One company called Easy Tweet Profits claims you can make up to $873/day online. They even claim one person earned $400,000/year using their method of tweeting your way to success. The catch? By signing up for their program you agree to be charged just under $50/month! There are a whole host of other companies with similar names (usually involving “make money” or “make profits”) that suggest social networking can be a cash cow. But their game is all the same. Whether you’re talking about something you see on Craigslist, eBay, Facebook, Twitter or whatever’s the next hot thing, you’ve got to be wary.


It's worth noting before we begin that *most* freelance positions do not come with attached fees — freelance writing, short tasks, work at home data entry jobs, search evaluation, and some transcription companies. You are mainly going to see the fees with employee positions — particularly call center work from home. Still, the list below is a mix of freelance and employee positions.

Even if you follow the advice in tip #3, it’s possible your card could get locked anyway. On top of that, it’s easy to find yourself in a situation where an ATM accepts only one network and not the other. For example, when we travelled in Japan, the only ATMs we could find that would even accept international cards were at 7-Eleven, and they only worked with cards on the Visa/Plus network. I speak from experience – there’s nothing more stressful than needing more cash and not being able to withdraw it, so be prepared and bring multiple cards on multiple networks.

US Bank: With no foreign partners or international ATM locations, US Bank also adds fees to all debit card transactions abroad including a flat fee and a 2% withdrawal charge for those made in US dollars and 3% in foreign currency.  However, the $2.50 fee is waived for Platinum and Premium Checking customers, while Gold Checking customers can get two fee waivers every statement period. This debit card is a must-have if you need to travel abroad! Though they are better known for their investment products, their debit card is really fantastic. It is similar to the Fidelity Check Card, you can compare these two and choose one of them. The main difference is that the Fidelity Check Card has a 1% Foreign Transaction Fee (FTF), while the Charles Schwab Debit Card doesn’t. Also, applying for the Fidelity Check Card does not result in a Hard Pull and the ATM withdrawal limit is $500, as opposed to $1000 for the Charles Schwab.
